As 2017 approaches we take a look back to some of the great jobs that the Major Projects team have carried out over the last couple of years. No two projects are the same and each one comes with its own set of obstacles to overcome. Luckily the team at Groundforce Major Projects never shy away from a challenge which is demonstrated in the plethora of complex schemes completed in the UK and Europe.

Groundforce Provides Shoring Equipment for Paris Metro Extension
Groundforce supplied complex propping solutions to the extension of line 14 of the Paris metro. The project consists of building the Mairie de Saint-Ouen station, creating new connections with the existing station on line 13. Two shafts, Pleyel and Pierre, which also provide exits for the tunnel boring machine, strengthening of the RER line C tunnel for the passage of the tunnel boring machine, plus 2.2 km of tunnel, in 3 sections bored by an earth pressure tunnel boring machine and the central Glarner shaft.
Groundforce’s Eurocode ‘Super’ Solution to Complex Basement
No fewer than 17 of Groundforce’s modular hydraulic props – some spanning almost 50m with no intermediate support – have featured in a complex structural support contract for a new luxury housing development in Hammersmith, London and the first project completed by Groundforce to EC3 Eurocde.
Groundforce Lends Support at Leicester Square
Groundforce used 3D modelling to assist in the design and installation of props supporting a large basement excavation in the heart of London’s West End. The two storey basement was constructed as part of the redevelopment of London’s famous Leicester Square by main contractor Brookfield Multiplex.
Groundforce mobilises massive hire fleet for Scottish Water project
Scottish Water is building a 3.1 mile-long waste water tunnel in the south of Glasgow as part of the biggest upgrade of the city’s waste water network in more than a century. Groundforce was awarded the hire contract for equipment to provide this support. The company proposed a system comprising of its modular Megabrace beams installed as a continuous waling beam braced with MP125 hydraulic props spanning the excavation.
Groundforce lends support at the Home of Cricket
Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) embarked on its Ground Development Masterplan with the building of a new Warner Stand at Lord’s Cricket Ground. The new stand will have 2,656 seats, a new match-control and match officials’ facility, and a restaurant, three bars and catering facilities. This large fan-shaped basement measured up to 33m in length and 22m in width, and was excavated within steel sheet piles, supported by proprietary props and waling beams supplied by Groundforce.
Can-do Attitude Wins Nottingham Contract
Essex groundworks contractor CJM has used a combination of Groundforce’s MP50 and Maxi Brace modular supports in a complex excavation in Nottingham. In order to reduce the temporary works requirement, CJM opted to construct the building’s two-storey basement in two phases, propping one side of the excavation until that half of the basement slab had been cast, then leap-frogging the supports to the other side and starting again.
Excavation support from Groundforce Shorco for Port of Immingham road access
A major project is currently under way to improve road access into the Port of Immingham in Lincolnshire. The £88 million A180/A160 Road Improvement scheme is designed to relieve congestion on this key strategic route, as well as stimulating growth and unlocking economic benefits in the area.
