What is Pile Cropping?

Concrete piles come in a variety of shapes and sizes and are used to establish a strong and stable foundation for buildings and other structures: concrete piling is particularly effective in poor soil conditions where piles can be driven deep into the ground. Once driven to depth, the piles will inevitably protrude above ground at different levels and will require cropping to a uniform height before building work can commence.

Precise, fast and agile pile croppers

The traditional use of manual pneumatic breakers is thankfully fading into the past, together with inherent problems such as Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS). Consequently, most pile croppers today will typically use hydraulically powered pile croppers to complete the task. These pile croppers are able to complete the work in a fraction of the time as the hydraulic process is controlled from within the excavator cab, meaning they can accurately nibble the concrete to size to leave an exposed, undamaged steel rebar with no spalling to the concrete.

The speed at which pile croppers can operate is partly down to the agile way in which the parent machine can deftly manoeuvre and position the pile cropper over a pile. The use of chain attachments, together with a connection to the excavator’s in-board hydraulics, means a fast cropping operation can be safely completed without operatives putting themselves at risk by entering the immediate pile cropping area.

A pile cropper for every situation

Contractors that hire pile croppers are able to draw on a wide range of cropper models to suit different scenarios. For example, Single Bar Pile Croppers and Multi-Bar Croppers would be the preferred choice for processing square section piles containing single and multiple steel rebars.

For rapid height reduction plus final nibbling, a Power Cropper would be ideal, whereas for large circular piles up to 1200mm diameter, CFA Croppers are widely used to quickly reduce the height of in-situ concrete piles.

When cropping in confined spaces, such as in a narrow trench where the movement of machinery and equipment is restricted, a Trench Cutter would be perfect as they are able to crop 300mm - 400mm piles in a trench width of just 700mm!
