I know last month’s entry promised you more on the principals of hydraulic struts, however there has been so much going on in the technical camp since my last transmission that I thought it might be preferable to hear about that instead…….so you’re just going to have to wait a little longer before we get back on with the joys of pre-stress!
Last month has been a very busy and exciting one for the technical team with a lot of people starting to sit up and take notice of what we can provide in respect of products, innovation and indeed service. Those of you who are lucky enough to get a bit of a lunch break and the chance to read NCE with a cup of tea and a biscuit will have already noticed the big yellow struts on the front cover of this month’s edition. For those of you who haven’t, the 3 page cover storey was an independently driven case study of a Galliford Try / McGee joint venture in which we provided the temporary propping for a deep basement scheme in central London. I won’t repeat all the details of the article but the gist of it was that McGees who have traditionally used structural steel for this type of project, opted for a proprietary system, incorporating our live load monitoring system and were very pleased with the results. It goes without saying that the coverage will be very valuable to us when it comes to bidding for more work in the coming months and years. The only downside was a spelling mistake to our company name!
Following on from this, we have been shortlisted as a finalist in the 2011 construction news awards in the “best use of technology” category for the load monitoring system we have introduced into large propping schemes over the course of the last year. We decamped yesterday and spent the day travelling down to the capital for the chance to present the benefits of our system face to face in front of a panel of judges. We don’t know at this stage whether we have won and we have some pretty tough competition in this category as you’d expect but will be keeping our fingers crossed between now and the 12th July when the winner is announced at the glittering award ceremony at Grosvenor House Hotel in London.
